One school of thought believes that it is better to wait until all the adult teeth are in before starting braces. However, Dr. Ha strongly believes in the benefits of early intervention and has treated numerous cases to patients’ benefits. At Dr. Gina Ha & Associates, we offer braces and Invisalign in North York.
Phase 1 early treatment, also called the orthopedic phase, will focus on developing beautiful faces by guiding the growth of jaw bones. This phase 1 treatment is usually started when the front teeth come in between the ages of 5 to 8. A removable or a fixed appliance is used to create enough room for permanent teeth, to align the upper and the lower jaws better, to break bad habits, and sometimes to expand the airway.
By guiding the teeth and jaw growth in a favourable direction, the second phase of the treatment, which involves braces, can be made simpler, shorter or even eliminated. By preparing the dental arches with phase 1 orthopedic treatment, there will be less need for removal of permanent teeth to make room, the need for major jaw surgeries can be reduced, and the braces will be on for a shortened period of time. Shorter treatment time in full braces means there will less of a chance for developing caries and periodontal problems, and a better self-image during the sensitive teenage years. We even offer Invisalign orthodontics for our North York patients looking to straighten their smile a little more discreetly.
To help your children grow beautiful smiles, please bring them for orthodontic/orthopedic screening with Dr. Gina Ha. They will surely thank you later!
