Does your partner complain about your snoring? Does your partner wake you up because you seem to stop breathing while sleeping? Do you always feel tired? You may be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Many patients who need a sleep apnea appliance in North York visit Dr. Gina Ha & Associates.
OSA is a condition in which your upper airway is obstructed during sleep. When the air cannot get through the airway, the oxygen saturation level drops, and your brain will automatically rouse you out of sleep just enough so that you can maintain your airway open and take a breath. Because you are not able to reach deep, quality sleep, you may always feel tired. Interestingly, though, individuals with OSA do not usually realize they have trouble breathing while sleeping and may even feel they sleep well. Individuals who had OSA for many years usually get used to daytime sleepiness or fatigue and do not realize it as unusual.
Because undiagnosed OSA can have a multitude of health effects such as increased risks for hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, stroke, depression, and weight gain, Dr. Ha routinely discusses sleep habits with all her patients as a part of her comprehensive examination. If she suspects that you may be suffering from OSA, Dr. Ha can guide you to appropriate resources for proper diagnosis.
If your OSA is severe, the recommended treatment is to use a device called CPAP. However, if you have a mild to moderate OSA or only suffer from loud snoring, Dr. Ha can help by making an individually customized oral appliance for you.
If you or your loved one is suffering from excessive snoring or obstructive sleep apnea, please ask North York family dentist Dr. Ha about your options today.
